summer Mathematics credit courses

All Delbarton students must be approved by their guidance counselor and the mathematics department chair before they may take a summer mathematics course for credit. To receive approval, please fill out the form here.

Students may only move up by taking one of our in-person, virtual, or asynchronous courses for credit. We do our best to offer at least one in-person section and either a virtual or asynchronous section for each course, however if registrations are low for a section, we cannot guarantee that it will be offered this summer. The general admissions requirements and requirements to receive credit are in the tabs below. Course descriptions are also available below.

Admissions Requirements

Students will only be permitted to move up at Delbarton through our in-person, virtual or asynchronous courses. We no longer permit students to receive credit through tutoring or other schools.
Current Delbarton students are required to have at least an A average in S1 and S2 and no less than an A- on the final exam to participate in the summer math for credit program.
Only in extraordinary situations will we permit incoming 9th graders to take a summer school Geometry or Algebra 2 course prior to starting the ninth grade. To do so they must demonstrate the following:
- An OTIS score of 90 or above in mathematics
- A minimum A average in the previous course from their sending school.
- The emotional maturity to handle the course.
- Incoming ninth graders will not be permitted to take Algebra 1 or Precalculus prior to the ninth grade.
- The student must attend the summer course in-person.
No elementary students from other schools are permitted to take a summer math for credit course. All participants in the program must have completed the seventh grade.
Per the current Delbarton Course Catalog, promotion to Linear Algebra is only permitted to those who have taken the BC course at Delbarton. Students wishing to move from AP Calculus AB to Linear Algebra the following school year can only be promoted over the summer by taking the BC exam in May 2026 and must receive a 5 AB subscore and a 5 BC score. Any student that fails to meet these thresholds will need to drop Linear Algebra and (re)take BC in Fall 2026.
The Guidance Department and Mathematics Department reserve the right to prohibit a student from participating in a summer math course for credit if we believe that the student does not yet possess the emotional maturity to participate in an intensive summer course.

Algebra 1

Course Description

This course is an introductory course in algebra. Topics include transforming equations and problem solving, inequalities and absolute value, laws of exponents and polynomial operations, rational and irrational expressions, and a brief introduction to Trigonometry and Statistics. Students will explore linear, quadratic, and other functions with their graphs, systems of linear equations, and factoring polynomials in a variety of patterns. Students are expected to have a thorough knowledge of arithmetic operations and an understanding of the real number system prior to the course.

Geometry

Course Description

Geometry comes from the Latin “Geo” meaning earth and “Metry” meaning measurement. Geometry is a branch of mathematics concerned with questions of size, shape, relative position of figures, and the properties of space. This course introduces properties of lines, planes, triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles. Reflections and transformations are used as a means of illustrating congruence of planar figures. Methods of inductive and deductive reasoning are used in the proof of theorems and constructions. Areas of polygons, circles, solids, and volume of solids are also discussed. Additional topics include a study of the trigonometry of right triangles.

Algebra II and Trigonometry

Course Description

This course is designed to expand the basic concepts of elementary algebra with more sophisticated techniques and in-depth applications. To succeed in this course students should be familiar with, but not limited to, basic operation with polynomials, equations of one and two variables, factoring, lines and their slopes, the concept of functions and relations, ratios and percentages, and the properties of exponents and radicals. In preparation for pre-calculus and calculus we will study rational expressions, logarithms, and exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions.

Pre-Calculus

Course Description

This course will prepare students to succeed in first-year calculus at either the high school or university level. Students will become familiar with the key behaviors and applications of the most commonly encountered functions in first-year calculus: polynomials, exponentials, and trigonometric functions. Special emphasis is placed on developing mathematical models that make use of these functions in order to investigate various natural phenomena. Toward the end of the year, this course may also explore additional topics such as matrix algebra, vector notation, and infinite series all of which students will need to know in order to succeed in the study of calculus beyond the first year.

Minimum Grades to Receive Credit

Students who attempt a summer mathematics credit course and receive at least a B- average in the first summer semester (S1) and the second summer semester (S2) and no less than a B- on the final exam will be granted credit for the course.
Students who attempt a summer mathematics credit course and receive grades between C and C+ for either S1 and S2 and no less than a C on the final exam will be required to get approval from Guidance and Mathematics Department to be promoted in the fall. Guidance and the Mathematics Department reserve the right to require the student to repeat the course during the school year.
Students who attempt a summer mathematics credit course and receive grades of C- or lower for S1, S2, or on the final exam will not be granted credit and will be required to repeat the course the following school year.
