Headmaster Fr. Michael Tidd, OSB, announced that two Delbarton seniors have been recognized as Semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Program.The Semifinalists are Student Body President Rohan Amin '20 and his classmate Adam Majmudar '20.
The boys join approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program who are eligible to compete for some 7,600 scholarships worth more than $31 million to be offered next spring. To be considered, Semifinalists fulfill several requirements, including a detailed application, academic records, extracurricular details and more, to advance to the Finalist level. Over 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and nearly half of the Finalsts ultimately win a National Merit Scholarship and earn the Merit Scholar title.
The National Merit Scholarship Program began in 1955 as an American academic competition that rewards achievement with recognition and scholarships. This year's Semifinalists placed in the top one percent of the more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2019 competition by taking the 2017 PSATs. Semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis and are the highest scoring entrants in each state.
