On the heels of their 4th state championship, Delbarton Baseball named NJ.com Team of the Year
From Cary, North Carolina to Hamilton Township in New Jersey, the Delbarton varsity baseball team faced some of the county's top programs this season, ending with a non-public state championship and a final #1 ranking according to NJ.com.
The Green Wave began their season still sour from a 1-0 loss to St. Augustine in last year's state final. With all but one starter from last year's team returning, the Green Wave were early favorites to win a state championship this season. The boys started the year in Cary, NC in the National High School Invitational against 16 of the top baseball teams in the country. After a tough extra inning loss in the opening game, the Green Wave won their next two games with a combined score of 28-0. After returning home, they opened 9-0 before a tough road loss to Bergen Catholic.
Behind the nearly perfect arm of Jack Leiter '19, the Green Wave defeated West Morris 2-1 in the Morris County Tournament Final. Senior Anthony Volpe '19, the team's offensive leader this year, supplied the offense in the tournament final, while Leiter was almost perfect, coming one strike away from a perfect game.
In the Non-Public A North tournament, Delbarton defeated Oratory Prep and Seton Hall Prep before defeating Don Bosco 2-0 on May 31 to win their third straight sectional championship. The non-public championship saw Delbarton defeat St. Augustine 4-3 in 8 innings behind the arm of Jack Leiter, a 2-run home run by Anthony Volpe, and the pitching and timely hitting from Shawn Rapp '19.
Delbarton finished the year 26-3, a perfect 16-0 at home, winning the program's 4th state championship. Anthony Volpe, the New York Yankees 30th overall draft pick, was named NJ.com Player of the Year as well.
Congrats to coach Bruce Shatel and his staff and athletes on an incredible run this season.
