This was a big weekend for Green Wave Athletics, with both Swimming and Wrestling bringing home Morris County Tournament titles.
Last year, after a 10 year drought, the Green Wave won the Morris County Title last year under the ranks for interim coach Kent Manno. This year, with a full squad featuring Jack Alexy, Thomas Shepanzyk and new head coach Patrick Savidge, the Green Wave looked to improve on last season's results, while keeping one thing in mind...repeat as Morris County Champions.
On Saturday, January 26, the Green Wave took home the title, with a 195 point victory. In the win, Delbarton won six of 11 events, including a record breaking time in the 100 freestyle for Thomas Shepanzyk. Jack Alexy broke his own meet records in the 50m freestyle and backstroke to solidify the victory by Delbarton. "It's more special to me, because these non-club swimmers came into the season and they're doing really well," said Alexy. "It shows they can make a difference. I had hope for them, but they totally exceeded my expectations. Each relay different guys, beyond the club swimmers, have shown up and contributed. All of us are so proud of them." The victory culminated with head coach Patrick Savidge belly flopping off the diving board, still in his dress shirt, pants and tie.
Delbarton's weekend of county tournaments concluded on Saturday evening as the Delbarton wrestling program secured its 11th straight Morris County title. For Coach Bryan Stoll and his wrestlers, this has been an up and down season, filled with injury and illness, along with growing pains after losing many of their roster to graduation last year.
Over the weekend, the Green Wave dominated the opposition at Mt. Olive High School as Delbarton had eight wrestlers who earned spots in the finals, with all eight coming out victorious. Nico Nardone won his first county title at 113, while Anthony Clark once again dominated the field to win at 120lbs. Andy Troczynski won 138, Dante Stefanelli won at 152, Vincent Andreano-160, AJ Lonski-170, Kieran Calvetti-182 and newcomer Luke Chakonis won at 195 lbs.
Freshman PJ Casale thoroughly impressed everyone at the tournament, taking home 3rd place at 220lbs while Jack Napeloni took sixth in the 126 lb group.Congratulations to the coaches and athletes and good luck as they proceed towards their goal of becoming state champions!
We salute our swimming and wrestling coaches and athletes on an outstanding weekend of Morris County competition. Go Green Wave!
