Delbarton Celebrates Winter Varsity Athletes
Meghan Podimsky

Delbarton School celebrated its winter varsity student-athletes with the return of the Winter Varsity Student-Athlete Awards Ceremony, held in the Fine Arts Center. A tradition dating back to the 1950s, the ceremony was revived to honor excellence, commitment, and community across Delbarton Athletics.

This winter, Green Wave student-athletes competed across eight varsity programs: wrestling, hockey, bowling, basketball, skiing, squash, indoor track, and swimming, all showcasing the depth and diversity of athletic opportunity at Delbarton.

The ceremony was led by Athletic Director Tony Negrin, with opening remarks and a closing benediction delivered by Fr. Michael Tidd, O.S.B. Dr. Negrin highlighted the dedication, discipline, and team-first mindset demonstrated by Green Wave athletes throughout the season.

  • Hockey – Head Coach Bruce Shatel

  • Basketball – Head Coach Matt Crane
  • Skiing – Head Coach Ken Johnson
  • Squash – Head Coach Craig Paris

Following the presentation of varsity letters, each program announced its individual awards, recognizing excellence, leadership, improvement, and contributions to team culture throughout the season.

The ceremony also featured a senior reflection delivered by Femi Oshodi '26, a captain from the swimming program. He spoke about his journey as a Delbarton student-athlete and the meaningful relationships built along the way. Addressing the underclassmen, he shared a message of encouragement and responsibility: “I’m truly confident that every single senior that’s up on stage with me today can say the same thing with their respective program: we can pass the torch to the next set of leaders. And that next set of leaders is every single one of you underclassmen sitting in the audience today.”

Special awards for senior student-athletes across all winter sports will be presented later this year at the Senior Athletes Banquet in May.

The continuation of our seasonal Varsity Student-Athlete Awards Ceremony serves as a meaningful reminder of Delbarton’s long-standing athletic tradition, and of the teamwork, resilience, and brotherhood that continue to define the Green Wave.
