It was a historic day at Raritan Valley Country Club on Monday, May 15, where the Green Wave not only took second place overall in Non-Public A, shooting a 317, but senior Tyler Lee '23 (Cal Berkeley) won his first individual Tournament of Champions title, shooting a 2-under 70 on the day.
Playing with Newark Academy's Arjun Caprihan, both boys finished with a 2-under 70 after 18 holes. On the first playoff hole, a par-3, 155 yard 10th hole, Caprihan's tee shot hit over the green to the left side. Lee's shot was similar, but much closer to the hole. Lee's second shot landed less than a foot away from the hole, and he tapped it in to par the hole. Caprihan's second shot went past the hole for an 8-foot put to force a second playoff hole, but he pushed his putt to the right, giving Lee the tournament title. "It means so much to me, being a senior and in my last high school tournament, it just means so much to win states as its always been a goal of mine. I haven't been playing well during this high school season and last year I came close but it still feels great to get it done," said a smiling Lee.
The tournament featured 128 golfers from 53 schools, including defending TOC champion Barnes Blake of Westfield, who finished 1-over 73. "Tyler is a terrific player and has been a rock out there for us the last two years as he started with us as a junior," said Delbarton head coach Sean Flanagan. "He is so consistent and leads the team as far as setting the pace and bringing the kids along. Winning a state championship is something you will remember the rest of your life. He has bigger fish to fry coming up in college, but he will always be a state champ."
Lee now joins Will Voetsch '15 as the only two Green Wave golfers to ever win the Tournament of Champions. Voetsch won his title in 2015, also winning by one stroke over CBA's Chris Gotterup.
Congrats to Tyler and the team on an incredible TOC!
