Tim Royse '19 Talks About the Path to Medical School
Jessica Fiddes

On February 7, Tim Royse '19 offered a presentation to members of Delbarton's Research in Science Club on the process of applying to medical school. Royse is a graduate of Boston College and a first-year medical student at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  Delbarton students were keenly interested in hearing him speak about what, for many, may seem like a daunting process. Tim talked about his Delbarton experience, his education, internships, networking and the application itself.

Research in Science Club moderator Brian Theroux later shared these takeaways from Royse's talk:

  • He said that his DelEX internship with neonatologist Dr. Tom Murphy '95 was the start of his clinical experience on the path to med school. DelEX is an externship program offered to rising Delbarton seniors that matches students to alumni and parents to various professions for brief, impactful externships. It's the perfect way to test a young man's interest in various fields before he moves on to college.
  • The Statistics class Royse took as an undergraduate was more useful than a required Calculus class he was required to take. Royse's advice: “Take Statistics!”
  • Royse explained why the majority of students take a gap year between college graduation and starting medical school. Royse's advice: "Enjoy your 4 years of college, take the MCAT during your senior year, then find an engaging internship or research partnership as you wait for med school placement."
  • Royse spoke highly of his involvement with the Operation Smile Club,  a service extracurricular at Delbarton which includes student participation on medical missions around the world to help children born with cleft lips or cleft palates in underserved communities. Royse's advice: "Take advantage of the opportunities Delbarton offers beyond the classroom and athletics."
  • He highlighted how the Delbarton network and alumni connections have been a very real and important resource for him. For example, he told the story of how he was able to get shadowing clinical experience. Royse's advice: "Use LinkedIn, and get connected to the Delbarton alumni network."

Theroux concludes, "A big thanks to Tim Royse for sharing a Friday afternoon with us, and to senior Ryan Scalfani '25 for coordinating Royse's visit."
