Teacher and Fly Fisherman Mike Carr '01 is a Published Writer
Jessica Fiddes

Delbarton teacher and alumnus Michael Carr '01 always knew that he wanted to be a writer. "I've tried a lot of things over the years from screenplays to short stories, but for some reason it was always missing an element." That element, it turned out, was a fly rod.

Teacher Mike Carr '01 recently conducted a fly-tying tutorial for members of Delbarton's popular Anglers Club.

Carr turned to fly fishing as a new challenge. "I grew up spin fishing for everything, so as I got older, I wanted to try something that had a lot more elements involved." Now primarily a fly angler, Carr has helped the Delbarton Anglers Club with fish stocking and fly-tying demonstrations. But, it was recently that he turned to a new and exciting challenging: outdoor writing.

With professional development assistance from Delbarton, Carr has been able to travel, interview, and write about fascinating people in the fly-fishing industry. He has placed multiple articles in On the Water magazine and recently sold his first piece to the industry standard publication Fly Tyer. His profile on Tim Flagler, videographer and expert fly tyer, will appear in the spring 2020 issue.

For all the time he's spent writing, it is the time on the water with family that is the most rewarding. "I've gotten my son into the sport and even my mother is now learning to fly cast." Carr looks forward to warmer weather and more Anglers' Club outings.
