May 19 was another busy morning for the Class of 2023, filled with the Senior Awards Convocation and an all-class picture and a graduation run-through in the Abbey Church.
Click here for the complete list of academic, activity and athletic awards earned by members of the Class of 2023 and we salute all award winners for their accomplishments this year. The Ceremony took place in the FAC theater where the awards were announced by Faculty Dean Josh Hartle, Campus Ministry Director Matthew White, Assistant Headmaster Chuck Ruebling '79 and Athletic Director Dan Whalen. White and Headmaster Fr. Michael Tidd, OSB distributed the many certificates, plaques and medals and we congratulate all recipients.
Next, underclassmen and seniors in jackets and ties listened to a farewell address from Student Body President Finn McDonald '23 who told his brothers, "The magic of Delbarton is the people...I've received many words of wisdom from many of them." After he received a well-deserved standing ovation, next came Dan Whalen who is stepping down as Athletic Director to return to serve as Assistant Director of Athletics (Facilities) during the 2023-2024 school year.
Echoing McDonald's reference to words of wisdom, Whalen shared funny, corny and inspirational words and thoughts to live by, pithy advice on how to stay positive, how to accept challenges and, above all, how to treat other people. For example, "When anyone asks me 'How are you doing', I have three responses: "Great, never better, and if I was any better I'd have to be two people." Click here to read Whalen's highly entertaining and inspirational remarks.
When the Ceremony ended, the Class of 2023 processed from FAC theater for a formal portrait of the Class in front of Old Main, Finally, the boys walked up to the Abbey Church for a graduation rehearsal led by the senior guidance staff. On June 4, our seniors will don special ties and lapel pins, process into the Abbey Church for Mass, receive their diplomas and listen to remarks from Graduation speaker Patrick Ramsey '86. Upon exiting the Church, these 140 young men instantly join the Long Green Line of Delbarton alumni and an exciting new chapter begins.
