On December 5, Run It Out, the annual Delbarton 5K, won a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Chairman’s Award at the Chairman’s Award Celebration for volunteers hosted at Forsgate Country Club in Monroe Twp, NJ.
Each April, Run It Out 5K takes place in memory of Brian Fleury P'19, a revered former Delbarton Athletic Director who lost his twenty-year battle with lymphoma in 2007.
The annual spring event was launched in 2011 by Green Wave runner Patrick Fischer '15 as his freshman project. Fischer was inspired by the many stories he heard of Fleury's lasting influence on the ethos and culture of the Delbarton athletic program.
Over the past thirteen years, Run It Out has raised more than $250,000 for the LLS mission. After Fischer graduated in 2015, Fleury's close friends, Delbarton Varsity Football Head Coach Brian Bowers and Melanie Bowers, Advancement Database Manager, sustained and grew the event with the help of many Delbarton faculty, staff, student and alumni volunteers, and in partnership with Villa Walsh Academy (VWA), including Fleury's wife, VWA Athletic Director Jen Fleury P'19, and their son Tim Fleury '19, and friends and family members from Fleury's hometown of Morris Plains, NJ.
Bowers accepted the award on behalf of Delbarton and the many Delbarton, Villa Walsh and community volunteers who have helped make this annual event a success.
Kerry Richardson of LLS, who is pictured above with Brian Bowers, previously wrote, "We are so grateful for your support of blood cancer patients and their families in memory of Brian Fleury. (We) are honored to have worked with you through the years, and we’re so excited to present this honor to your community." We are thankful for the many Delbarton community members who continue to contribute to and support our annual Run It Out 5K and commend them for the collective impact they've made on the LLS mission.
