Featured AP Artist: Carlos Pelayo '22
Jessica Fiddes

This year, Delbarton is blessed with thirteen artists in the Class of 2022 who shared their work at an AP Art Exhibit in the FAC during the month of February. To give each of these talented young men the audience he deserves, we are highlighting each artist with an excerpt from his Artist Statement, a sample of his art and a link to his digital portfolio.

Our tenth featured artist is Carlos Pelayo '22 (click here for Carlos's complete digital portfolio)...

Carlos says this about his art in his Artist Statement:

"Whenever I am bored, I draw. I turn to art when I have had enough of the animosity of life and need a mental break. Relaxing while letting my imagination spill onto the paper is an experience unlike any other, which is why I signed up for Studio Art the summer of my junior year the first chance I could. While I had experience in previous art classes spanning from 2nd grade to sophomore year, I could never pour my heart and soul into a piece and this full-year junior course allowed me to do that. The tools at my fingertips, from Delbarton’s helpful teachers to the resources and materials other schools couldn’t offer, allowed me to explore my talents and find my passion in the art world. At the height of the pandemic, I specifically remember being assigned an assignment by Ms. Servillio that intrigued me: creating a miniature doodle of anything. My creation was that of whimsy and visual interest and, while I still didn’t know what we were going to do with them, I was ready to find out. Little did I know this piece would spark the idea of my senior year Sustained Investigation and launch printmaking atop my favorite mediums."

Below is a sample of Carlos's art which alludes to his experiences as a Delbarton Abbey Players actor: Break A Leg (14.24"x10.25", drypoint etching). We salute him and his fellow AP Art artists for their exceptional achievements in the arts at Delbarton this year!
