On December 7, members of the Delbarton Swim team, joined by Coaches Pat Savidge and Alma Lopez-Holder, volunteered with other local teens at the Saturdays in Motion holiday party session at the Somerset Hills YMCA.
Saturdays in Motion is the largest and longest running non-public recreational program for children with autism in the country. In the program, young volunteers work in the Y’s gym and pool with children who have autism and other special needs and their siblings, and the annual holiday party attracted much support from young people at area schools.
Local attorney Arthur Raynes, on far right in the all-volunteer group photo above, created the program and for 31 years has run the Saturdays in Motion at the Somerset Hills YMCA. In a follow-up message to Delbarton Headmaster Fr. Michael Tidd, O.S.B, Raynes wrote about our swimmers and coaches: "The Delbarton volunteers were outstanding in every respect. They worked hard, they focused on the kids in the program, they had constant smiles on their faces, and they spread holiday cheer in every way. Some even joined our carolers, at my request. Coach Savidge, Coach Lopez-Holder and the young men on the team are a credit to the Delbarton community."
Each of the Green Wave's seventeen sports programs participates in at least one community service projects throughout the year. We commend our Green Wave swimmers and coaches for contributing so positively to this wonderful annual event that benefits children with autism in our community.
