Delbarton Hosts Ramadan Interfaith Fast and Feast
Meghan Podimsky

At Delbarton, students have the option of taking Arabic taught by Mr. Zack Tabor to fulfill their world language requirement. While immersing themselves in this course, in addition to language skills the students acquire insight on aspects of Arab cultures and societies. So too, Global Delbarton trips to the Middle East, like the excursion to Jordan that took place during spring break, also expose students to a different culture and to Islam.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is a holy month of fasting. During Ramadan, devout Muslims fast throughout daylight hours, from dawn and sunset. For several years,  Tabor's Arabic classes have chosen to fast communally for one day during Ramadan. This year, the experience was expanded to include member of the Delbarton Arabic Club and Diversity Among Peers (DAP), giving many the opportunity to learn more about Islam, and the role that fasting plays in many world religions. Family members got involved to plan a unique event, the Delbarton Interfaith Fast and Feast which began in the dark at 4:45am on April 22.

To begin, community members met virtually over Zoom to share a Suhoor meal.

The fasting began, and continued until sundown at 7:45 PM, then concluded with a celebratory feast in the Formal Garden where attendees listened to remarks from Fr. Michael O.S.B., students of Arabic, members of the Arabic Club, parents and Mr. Tabor.

From savory bites to stunning desserts, this unique event was a night filled with brotherhood, community and, of course, delicious food. A big salute to DAP and the Arabic Club for collaborating to make this event happen, to all our hardworking parent volunteers and to our DEIB coordinators for bringing our community closer. Thank you also to PCDI parent volunteer Ashley Doyle P'24, 25, for sharing some amazing photos from the event!
