On November 7, Dan Miggins ’08 returned to Delbarton to speak with 7th graders as part of the Middle School Speakers Series. The series presents Delbarton alumni from a variety of professions to our youngest students to talk about their shared Delbarton experience, and teach our young men about the many career options ahead.
Dan Miggins is a Delbarton lifer who participated in sports, arts and service activities. After trying a variety of sports in Middle School, he tried lacrosse and bowled during the winter season. A committed member of the Schola Cantorum choral group for all six years, his community service participation included SADD, tutoring and Big Brothers. He traveled to Ireland for the Glenstal Exchange and served as a tour guide (now known as student ambassadors) as part of the Admissions process. In Delbarton lingo, Dan Miggins was ‘all in’.
After graduating from Delbarton, he earned a B.S. in finance and marketing from Lehigh University. Originally from Maplewood, then Short Hills, he now lives in Los Angeles where he works in commercial real estate handling large, distressed property transactions. He adeptly explained to boys the basics of commercial real estate and how financial downturns have a major impact on sector outcomes.
Describing the many ways he has tapped into the Delbarton alumni and parent network over the years, Miggins encouraged middle schoolers to do the same as they navigate through school, college and life. Miggins serves as a Class of 2008 class representative and is a member of the Delbarton Alumni Association Board. He and his fellow reps are the glue that keep their '08 classmates connected.
After joining his family’s real estate business out of college, then deciding to move on several years later, he connected with three Delbarton commercial real estate contacts and landed his first commercial real estate job which moved him in a new direction and, ultimately, to the West Coast. Miggins currently works for Hilco Real Estate in Los Angeles. Coincidentally, in LA he met a new neighbor two doors down and, after discovering their shared New Jersey roots, the neighbor turned out to be Dave Lee ’03, an LA-based screenwriter.
“It’s a small world,” Miggins said, as he offered example after example of the power and reach of the Delbarton alumni network.
Our youngest students asked him some excellent questions, and Miggins encouraged them to reach out later with more. Middle School Director Rick Cimino thanked Dan Miggins ’08 for his visit, and we snapped this group photo before the boys moved on to their next class.
In town for his sister’s wedding this weekend, Miggins was on his way back to the city for meetings. We thank him for stopping by to guide his younger Delbarton brothers on a beautiful mid-fall day on campus.
