2026 AP Artist Spotlight: Matt Tafuri ’26
Meghan Podimsky

As part of Delbarton’s annual AP Art Exhibit, we are proud to continue our AP Artist Spotlight series, highlighting the incredible talent of our senior artists. This week, we feature Matt Tafuri ’26, whose work explores the intersection of sports, mindset, and emotion.

“Art became a way for me to express myself and challenge my creativity. Over time, I’ve realized that I enjoy pushing myself to see what I’m capable of and discovering new ways to grow as an artist," he explained in his Artist Statement.

Tafuri's interest in art began at a young age, inspired by hours spent with his grandfather, who is also an artist. Watching his grandfather’s dedication to detail sparked Matt’s curiosity and fueled his desire to experiment with different techniques and materials. As he developed his skills, art became more than a hobby; it became a way for him to explore complex ideas and express personal experiences.

For his Sustained Investigation, Tafuri focuses on mental health in athletes, a topic that resonates with him as a two-sport athlete. By experimenting with color, shadow, and expressive techniques, his work emphasizes how stress, confidence, focus, and the fear of failure impact athletes’ performance both on and off the field.

"With my art, I hope to inspire athletes to face these struggles and embrace them rather than hide from them. I aim to show the power your emotions have over you, rather than just showing someone on the field or court, he explained.

Through his art, Tafuri not only challenges himself technically but also encourages viewers to consider the psychological and emotional dimensions of athletic performance. His use of multiple media and thoughtful approach invites reflection on the unseen pressures athletes face.

We thank Matt for sharing his work and insights. Be sure to check back for the next AP Artist Spotlight in this year’s series!
