After a rollicking season of ups and downs Green Wave Varsity Lacrosse, coached by Chuck Ruebling '79, has been named the 2012 All Daily Record Lacrosse Team of the Year.
Delbarton started off the season with a 1-3 record, with one-goal losses to Ridgewood, St. Anthony’s and Chatham. A team meeting got guys back on track and they came out swinging. The team fought for a seven-game winning streak including a 17-7 victory over previously unbeaten Mountain Lakes in April. The Green Wave suffered a setback against Summit on May 2, won their next three but then fell to the Lakers in the Morris County Tournament final on May 12.
Down and out, right? Wrong.
After that MCT loss, Delbarton regrouped and won the next three games to earn its second-straight Non-Public A title and sixth in seven years. But victory did not come easily in the Non-Public A final against Don Bosco Prep. As the Daily Record reports, "The Green Wave were down four goals with two minutes to go in the game when they staged a surprise comeback to win the game in overtime. Senior attack Connor Bilby scored with 13 seconds left to tie the game 7-7, and senior midfielder John Shaffer scored with 2 minutes, 45 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give Delbarton the win." Delbarton Lacrosse fans aged a bit, but the grey hairs were worth it. The team next advanced to the Tournament of Champions final with wins over Montclair Kimberley Academy and a sweet, pay back win over Summit.
The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat. 2012 was a character-revealing season that embodied the Delbarton motto Succisa Virescit (cut down, it grows back stronger). Part of the team's spring drill involved a basic training exercise with former military officers, and the experience showed. These guys fought. Hard.
The Delbarton community is proud of the Green Wave lacrosse team's battle-tested persistence that earned the distinction of being named Team of the Year. Read Daily Record coverage here...and Go Wave Lacrosse!
