Pitcher John Masella '13 and Green Wave are Player and Team of the Year
Posted June 25, 2012
Green Wave pitcher John Masella '13 has been named 2012 All Daily Record Baseball Player of the Year and Delbarton Baseball is 2012 All Daily Record Team of the Year.
Masella threw to a 6-1 record, with his single loss versus Don Bosco in the state sectional final, where he gave up just one hit in four innings against the state’s top offensive attack. Delbarton Varsity Baseball Coach Bruce Shatel told the Daily Record, "His composure is far beyond his years. It’s not so much his ability level, but it’s his approach. Johnny keeps a low pulse at all times and he’s a totally cerebral kid. He lives down in the zone and he’s a master of that." (Read complete Daily Record coverage here.)
Masella's teammates were right there with him. Green Wave Baseball earned a 22-7 overall record, won the Morris County Tournament championship and the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference-National Division title. They advanced to the NJSIAA Non-Public A North title game before falling to nationally ranked Don Bosco Prep.
Coach Shatel appreciated the team's great camaraderie that led to a strong, collective effort. “If you look at our lineup, we had a different guy delivering the key hit every day,” Shatel told the Daily Record. “We never relied on one guy.” Even the pulled hamstring epidemic didn't stifle the team's competitive spirit that resulted in a season of success.
