Two Wave Tennis Players in State Singles Run

Coach John Thompson reports that the Green Wave tennis team has two players still alive in the state tennis tournament. Both made the ultimate sacarifice for their sport yesterday -- they skipped graduation yesterday to win their matches. Worth it!

Chase Savage '12, first singles for Delbarton, was seeded fourth in the entire state this year for the state singles tournament. He got a bye in the first round and then beat Bergen Tech, Shawnee, and Millburn to advance to the quarterfinals. Thompson says, "Chase is coming off of an amazing season winning the MCT first singles title and playing tough against the best players in the entire state. He helped lead this year's team to a county, conference, and state title as co-captain of the team. His class and professionalism on the court have been truly remarkable and countless opposing coaches, players, and fans remarked on how well Chase conducted himself both on and off the court. This is his third year at first singles and he is zeroing in on his 100th win as a Delbarton tennis player if he wins in the quarter finals against Michael Chen of Holmdel."

Spencer Furey '12, Delbarton's second singles player, was seeded 9 to 16 alphabetically in the state singles tournament, an impressive feat for a second singles player. He beat JP Stevens, Whippany Park, Old Tappan, and Haddonfield to advance to the quarter finals. Says Thompson, "We have never had a second singles player advance to the quarter finals of the state tennis tournament. Spencer is coming off an amazing regular season where he went 31-0 and is now 35-0 after the four state singles wins, one of the best records ever in Delbarton tennis history. Indeed, his performance at second singles this year sets him apart as perhaps the best second singles player in the history of Delbarton School. He was instrumental in helping to lead the team to county, conference, and state titles and won the MCT second singles title. His fiery and aggressive play inspired the whole team. He has only lost one set all year long. He plays Jonathan Carcione of Ramapo, the first seeded player on Tuesday."

Both guys play their quarter final matches on Tuesday at 3:00pm at Mercer County Park with semi finals on Wednesday and finals on Thursday. Their coach points out that prior to Savage and Furey's singles success this year, the best ever performance of a Delbarton player was when Henry Steer made it to semi finals four years ago.
