The Delbarton English Department is pleased to announce its summer 2012 reading program! All students are required to read several grade-specific books prior to the start of the 2012 - 2013 school year. Click here to read a letter from Michael Vermylen, English Department Chair, introducing the required summer reading list for each grade.
In addition, all students and faculty are required to read The Heart and the Fist: The Education of a Humanitarian, the Making of a Navy SEAL by Eric Greitens. (Click here to hear Greitens' explanation of his book's theme of courage and compassion.) This additional reading requirement addresses Delbarton's educational goal of global awareness. Click here for more information on this terrific book and how it will be incorporated into Delbarton's curriculum next year.
All summer reading books will be available May 16th for purchase through MBS Direct, Delbarton's online virtual bookstore. Click on Order My Books, then select Summer Reading 2012.
Delbarton students are also encouraged to read for pleasure during the summer. Reading good books is the best way to improve reading comprehension, reading rates, and vocabulary plus reading is a great way to expand horizons and build neural connects that make you a better informed, wittier and generally more fun-to-be around person. Want to impress your family, friends and, yes, even girls? Read, men!
Visit your local bookstore or online book retailers to find fiction and nonfiction that interest you (and not necessarily your English teacher). That's one of the benefits of summer...you get to choose!
